FAQ — Carry Safe NYC

Question 1

Who needs this training?

Accepted Answer

New York State requires firearms safety training as part of the concealed carry license application process. This course is designed for anyone applying for a New York State Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA) license, as well as anyone who wants a structured, professional foundation in safe firearm handling — regardless of whether they are pursuing a license.

Question 2

Do I need prior firearms experience?

Accepted Answer

No prior experience is required. The course is structured to meet students where they are. Classroom instruction covers the fundamentals before any live-fire exercise, and all range work is supervised. Students with prior experience will also benefit from the structured curriculum and the legal and safety framework specific to New York.

Question 3

Are firearms and ammunition provided?

Accepted Answer

Firearms are available for use during the live-fire portion of the course. Ammunition and range fees are not included in the $550 tuition and are the student's responsibility. Exact costs vary by range facility and will be communicated prior to the live-fire session. Students who own a legally registered firearm may bring it with prior approval.

Question 4

What identification do I need to bring?

Accepted Answer

Students must bring a valid, government-issued photo ID to both sessions. Acceptable forms include a New York State driver's license, a New York State non-driver ID, a U.S. passport, or a U.S. military ID. You must also be legally eligible to possess a firearm in New York State. Students who cannot present valid ID on the day of class will not be permitted to participate.

Question 5

Does completing this course guarantee a concealed carry license?

Accepted Answer

No. Completion of this course satisfies the training requirement for a New York State concealed carry license application but does not guarantee that a license will be issued. Licensing decisions are made by the relevant licensing authority based on a full review of each applicant. Carry Safe NYC does not influence or participate in that process.

Question 6

What happens during the live-fire session?

Accepted Answer

The live-fire session takes place at a licensed range facility in the New York City area. Under direct instructor supervision, students practice safe loading, unloading, and firing techniques using the fundamentals covered in the classroom session. All range safety rules are strictly enforced. Students who are not comfortable proceeding with live fire at any point may stop without penalty — safety is the first priority.
